The VHS track and field team had a strong season this year, with a squad of nineteen runners, throwers, and jumpers. We competed in eight meets, earned dozens of medals, and had a lot of fun along the way. Highlights of the season include the girls’ 4×800 meter relay’s speedy improvement, the athletes’ stellar performances at the Saint Johns Invitational, and the chance to run in the NAU Skydome in Flagstaff in March. As a coach, I was particularly impressed by the willingness of athletes to attempt events they had never tired before with great sportsmanship.
We ended our season with six athletes qualifying for the state championships in eight events: 800 m, 1600 m, 3200 m, 4×800 m relay, shot put, discus, high jump, and triple jump. Although one athlete was unable to attend due to injury, the five girls we brought to Mesa did a great job at states. Megan Smith threw personal bests in both the discus and the shot put, qualifying for the finals in the discus and throwing the furthest in her flight in the shot put. The girls’ 4×800 m relay team improved on their previous personal best time by 6 seconds. Chelena Betoney and Terri Mitchell ran season bests in the 3200 m as well.
With many sophomores and juniors on our team, we’re looking forward to improving upon our success next year.
